The rise of digital payments opens a new chapter in the practice of donation: internationally, more and more charities are embracing the opportunity of modern technology and accept donations in cryptocurrency.
It is encouraging to see that this trend is also prevailing in Hungary, where the number of non-profit organizations that can be supported in this way is growing. The earliest of adopters in Hungary was SOS Children's Villages, which - thanks to CoinCash - accepts contributions in Bitcoin and Ether since 2019, while in March 2024, another charitable organization, Only One Mission that assists homeless people in Budapest, Hungary, decided to take a step towards the future and target a new layer of donors by opening up this new channel of accepting donations. Based on the positive experiences gained through helping SOS Children's Villages in 2019, CoinCash decided to also back Only One Mission’s initiative and offered to convert the money raised in Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ether or Tether into Hungarian forints for the non-profit organization free of charge.
What is Only One Mission?
Only One Mission is a charitable organization founded by Anna Kunszabóné Pataki, a mother of five who felt called to serve the poorest in society. The organization has been helping people living in extreme poverty and homelessness since January 2011; the enthusiastic and dedicated team runs a social aid centre in the 6th district of Budapest, where they provide care for an average of 120-180 homeless people per day with the help of their volunteers.
The services provided by Only One Mission include distribution of food (breakfast and lunch) and vitamins, provision of toiletries and monthly medication support, telephone and internet access and other forms of support varying according to the season. Social workers help the homeless, whom they call "guests", with administration and job search, while other colleagues are responsible for providing mental and spiritual support to those in need. Apart from providing day-to-day care, Only One Mission also runs a long-term support programme called the "Lift Up! program", which provides long-term financial support for those in need to reach their goals.
A goal of utmost importance for them is to help by any means possible those homeless people who appear to be willing to change their lives. The organization is proud of the fact that, thanks to their unique approach based on dedicating quality time and personal attention to those in need, they have managed to help more than 25 of their guests permanently quit homelessness since 2011. An organization governed by Christian values, Only One Mission is not funded by a large foreign parent organisation, domestic church or any other institutional sponsor in Hungary, meaning they are financially independent, which make their results all the more commendable. Currently, 75% of their costs are covered by private donations, which is unique in the Hungarian non-profit sector.
Why donate in cryptocurrency?
You may have been hooked on crypto years ago, in which case you know exactly what the benefits of donating using blockchain technology are. But if you're new to it, you should know that donating in crypto has a number of advantages in addition to its modernity, including speed, simplicity, transparency and the ability to remain completely anonymous.
We, the CoinCash team, are delighted to play our part in Only One Mission’s opening towards cryptocurrencies and look forward to seeing this fundraising channel to be utilized by even more Hungarian non-profit organizations.
